I have a lavender Louisiana Iris who's blooms stand about 3-3.5 foot tall. Gorgeous flowers too. I also have white Butterfly Ginger that shoots stalks up about 4 feet tall. Blooms in the fall. Oh and I have lotus in a 20 gal. tub that will stand over 4 feet tall.

Your planting zone will help determine what will survive for you. I'm in 7a.

I'm with you on the cattails. Too much work and I hear they can puncture liners too.

Nice zone! You'll get so many great things growing there. Maybe even Overgrowing so keep an eye out for invasive/aggressive sorts. I forgot about my maroon iris that's also in the bog, Ann Chowning Louisiana Iris. Pretty sure I got them both off of ebay. Cheers.

Nurseries sometimes have aquatic plants especially the larger ones. But online there are plenty of choices too - just stick to the more established sites (ebay, etsy) or even online commercial nurseries or pond stores. There's quite a range in pricing so just shop carefully.
I even found an aquatic plant at walmart today. Oh, Home Depot and Lowes sometimes has some too. They had some nice black Elephant Ears today.

Any other plants that are tall that don't get so heavy?

I threw out my cattail after one year and went with sedges instead. There are many different kinds out there, some can handle more water than others. I grow smooth black sedge and an unknown specie. The roots will still pack in and get heavy after a few years but the trick is to plant in small enough pots that they never get too heavy. I try to stick with 1 to 2 gallon pots, and sometimes I even shove them in smaller ones.

Ignore the blooming marsh marigold. My sedges get about 2' to 2.5' tall, but the tops droop over so they aren't quite as tall. This is actually multiple pots pushed near each other. I'd personally always choose sedges over cattails. I just think they look nicer. Slightly better behaved but can still get out of control if you let them.
