I have two red claw crabs with brackish water and access to dry land but a day ago I noticed one on its back and now today it has its belly flap opening but is emitting a dead fish smell. Can anyone tell me if it is dead or just molting? The thing is is that I think it molted just around a week ago.

I know nothing about red claw crabs, but I do know a dead fish smell is rarely a good thing! Hope someone can help you out with an answer!

If it smells bad it is dead. When crabs molt/shed they back out of the shell and the hard shell is left empty. They don’t turn upside down either at least not intentionally. Also, the crab should still be moving around a bit even if it is molting.

Help to have a pic, does it move if you touch it?
