It is a very cool plant and I enjoyed having it for awhile, then it all just disappeared. Wasn't in a pond w/fish either. I think I disturbed it one time when I cleaned the muck out of the water it was in and it left. Loves muck!
There is more out there along a bike trail near town if I ever get the ambition to pluck out some more of it. If I put it in the pond w/the fish I have to protect it from them as they will eat it. Grows well in floating rings in a pond.

I made a giant floating ring for it also. It turns red at times.

Here it is in the little pond all by itself.

I wish I felt comfortable using my floating nets as I loved them for plants, but a few summers ago a couple of my koi jumped into them and couldn't get out.

That looks like what some folks call duckweed. Unfortunately if it is duckweed it’s banned in South Carolina. Too bad too because our koi eat it like candy.

I've found floating plants like azolla and duckweed (they are different species) are excellent at consuming excess nutrients.
Of course they only last a few months up here.

Very interesting article - thanks for sharing! I have looked for azolla for my pond for the last couple of years, without luck. This renews my interest!
