Over the years I have had many awuariums and ponds. During my 20 years on our farm, I had a small preformed backyard pond, a barnyard pond and a large pasture pond. Now at my current house with a small backyard I have been experimenting. I began with a large flowerpot, snails, crayfish and small goldfish. The goldfish from various pet shops are had diseases. I spent alot of time and money trying to save them. Out of about 15, I have 3 big beautiful survivors. They overwintered in a big plastic tote in the basement. They are now about 6-8" and growing. I have them in a 100 gallon black rubber stock tank. Running a sponge filter and an awuarium waterfall filter. Waiting on a Tetra submersible pump for the box filter that arrived earlier this week. I added water lettuce and hyacyith. They should start dividing soon and help with water quality. When I do water changes I use that in my garden. For those of you using box filters I would some input.

I have never had to do a water change.. once cycled I regularly add beneficial bacteria and barley extract as per the directions. If I get a lot of evaporation or lose a little from splashing out of my waterfall I add tap water with a little stress coat. In my opinion, when you do a water change you are throwing away good water.

Never do I change all of my water at once. I sometimes do a slow water in slow water out to give it a refresh as my filter is not that great. I have well water so I don't need any dechlor.

Hello and welcome! I use a box filter, but I use it as a pre-filter and not as a primary filter. My primary filter is a Skippy-type filter for biological filtration, and the box filter is for mechanical filtration.

I bet you would be a perfect candidate for a bog filter set up! Many on here use bogs. They are natural, and add beauty to the pond and yard. Others will be chiming in here and I’m sure this isn’t the last time you will hear the bog mentioned.

Please post pictures of your pond! If it is only 100 gallons, then those 3 big goldfish might be all you need.

Thanks. Yes. Looking into bog filter. Just started getting a variety of water plants. Repotted them today. I think the tank is getting too much sun. Water keeps turning green too wuickly. Never had that before. Previously they were under the house eaves. May have to move it.
