The difference is with the bog the flow is reduced greatly giving bacteria and plants a chance to absorb the nutrients.
The Skippy while having similar surface area its more of a mechanical filter as the water is pushed through much faster. The bacteria still does its job but it is constantly having to start over after the pads are rinced off.
