Hello all,

I would like to build a container pond on my raised deck that I would keep up year round. I'm in zone 7b. I have a 4'x4' area and can make it 3' or more deep. The deck is more than strong enough with 2x12's at 9" centers since the decking is 1 by at an angle. I intend to include a bog over about half of this which may be used as a filter. It will definitely have a section for pitcher plants and sundews. This section I'm thinking can be a heavy storage tub. It will definitely have a separate area for the carnivorous plants if I use it as a filter.

I was originally thinking of making it all out of wood with a flexible liner. Yesterday, however, I saw where someone used a rigid plastic container for a large pond of similar construction. Either way, I plan on surrounding the bottom and sides with foam insulation and some outer finished material.

I'm looking at 2 questions:
  1. Which method would you recommend for the main pond area, liner or container?
  2. If a container, I'm having a hard time finding something about the size I need. Can you point me in the right direction here?
I'm currently good on thoughts regarding the bog. Do I'm looking for suggestions on the larger, "pond" area.

i'm not a fan of preforms unless they are rubbermaids but even then its hard to decorate and make it look natural and not like a tub with some plants.
but as you know wood has its issues as well it can rot. masonry it can crack and is heavy.

on a deck is the answer a rubbermaid but lined with epdm so you can get creative?
