I am still in the design stage of a 1,000 sq. ft. swimmable pond. Since I am doing much of the work, I hired a consultant to guide me. He's been good so far, but here's what he suggested for plants:
6 iris, 4 thalia, 4 pickeral, 4 cattail, and two lilies
What concerns me is the cost. He is quoting $250 per plant for a total of $5,000.
Is this reasonable?

Completely unreasonable. An order of magnitude, at least, unreasonable.

Just recently purchased 38 plants to fill in this previous micro pond for $600.

Welcome to the forum. Agree that is crazy money for each unless there are some bulk lots involved.

Pond iris retail for 10 - 15 dollars. Lilies, maybe you mean crinum? 10 - 15 or more for new varieties.
Pickerell weed and cattails free.

check out webbs water gardens online . I got 2 plants from them and they are still thriving even after the epic ice storm we had a couple of years ago . They were in my lily preformed pond last year and it froze solid and they still came back this year again 250 dollars a plant I would expect them to be planted and maintained by the guy for the next 15 years and replacements if they die .

Geez, you may want to reevaluate your relationship. I have lilies (Wanvisa red), pickerel weed and lavender Louisiana iris that I can share for postage. Addy taught me how to share 😉

@Mr. Muir
Holy Cow that's outrageous for plants! Get them on here for just the price of postage or at places online that sell for way cheaper!
Bought my 1st water lilies at Lowes. Most others from friends and online. You can buy garden plants too at Lowes or HomeDepot and put in pots in the pond. Sedges work great w/just there roots in water and heads above. Some plants you can find out in the wild.
I love Parrots Feather, Sedge, Water Hawthorne, Floating Hearts, Anacharis and Hornwort.
Creeping Jenny you can plant around the outside of your pond and let it creep over the sides and down towards the water. Sprawling type Sedums are nice also for around the edge of the pond.

oh -- and you couldn't pay me to put cattails in my pond or bog. They go crazy.
I have a few Dwarf Cattails stuck in between some rocks w/their feet in the water. They have behaved there for years. Never would I add large type to my pond!

I bought a cup of Typha minimus (Dwarf cattails) at Lowes of all places, they had a water garden display
with Water lilies and Louisiana iris.
Perfect miniature cattails for decorating, no more than 3 feet tall.

@Mr. Muir even to drive across the state to pick them up and cone back and plabt them i am assuming into a wetland all pea stone or 3/4 those would have to be extremely mature plants ones wraped in burlap not in 5 quart sizes. To be honest with you i caution his aelection as well. Depending on the type of iris as well as your area they could grow out of control. As with the type of cat tails. And id hope the lillies are african the type you can almost laydown on. They are big enough just not strong enough.

Where are you located hell we could get 4 of us here in the group to send you are throw aeays in another month and well be nice and only charge 2000 and well handle shipping and give ypu three times that many plants
As mentioned yes plants can get pricey but not quite that bad. Play it koi is another grower i have used. But heres a tip since your just starting , start right and give your plants a dip in potasium pergonite. It will kill any hitch hikers on the plants. Like snails and parasites.
