It seems I've made my bed with this 100g barrel. Getting it out of the ground is not easy at all, I emptied it and there's some remaining 3/4 gravel there so very light but it's stuck to the soil, digging around it isn't a simple task either given I have narrow space to work with. I got it out the last time, though I don't recall what I did to get it out, I know it was stuck too but then I did something. Guess I just dug under it but not proving to be so easy this time, this time it's basically entirely buried, and now I've probably dug 2/4 of it out. It's problematic because I can't be forceful otherwise I'm gonna poke a hole.

Either the freeze/thaw destroyed my ball valve of the bog filter, or I did, so another great thing.

If anyone has experience in this matter I wouldn't mind some tips. Although I don't imagine this is common practice.

If your not in freezing weather right now you can try hosing around the barrel to loosen the soil. A good jet nozzle works wonders for moving soil!

Maybe it'll work, I'll try. Though I would have thought it'd be the other way around since its clay.

Well, no easier now than it was 4 days ago. It's a narrow space, my goal would be to dig next to the bottom of the barrel and raise, but easier said than done, in narrow space digging to 3ft deep is not easy. And again I wonder what am I even doing, this thing is solid as a rock, perhaps it's the conditions that make the PVC so rigid and maybe that's why I'm not having any luck but I am not an expert, I just know in May stars aligned and I pulled it out like nothing yet it was still 2/3 buried, temperatures probably play a role in this as then they would be 10c-15c at night, currently they get below zero and day's not much better.

At any rate, when I get it out I am wondering if it is even worth putting back, or getting a 50g barrel which is easier to maintain, or maybe try to do a lined bog. A lined bog I thought about even over a year ago when I was first thinking of building it, but the issue with that is seaming the liners together which I have zero experience with, maybe that's the way to go I'll have to think about it. I like the idea of trying that, but might be a waste of time and money, this year however I am looking to be more hands off than the previous 2 years where I was a bigger fool so whatever I think yields better results I'll do.

Still wrestling with the barrel. Really I think if it were 20-25c instead of 10c and at night below 0 I would have no issue.
I keep trying to dig under it, try to loosen it a bit... But at this point I'm gonna end up just digging all around it to get it out, want to get the lined version done before end of Feb.

cut the thing in half , use a shop vac to suck out the stone. cut the barrel and make a proper bog. Case solved, by the time you get done trying to salvage your barrel , you'll damage the liner and have to start over anyways.
