I don't really get leaves in my pond but I keep window screening over each of my pond .It is fine and you can see into it and little frog or bird legs do not get stuck in it .I use metal conduit and sew a pocket each end of the window screening and use rocks to hold it where i want it .Leave it on all the time

Is there a particular pest -- I assume you are talking about insect pests -- that you are concerned about? Or are you just thinking as a "what if" situation? If you have insect pests that you need to get rid of, one thing you can do is cover your pond with a tarp or large sheet of plastic when you spray or apply a pesticide to the trees or other plants. This will keep the pesticide out of the water.

And as far as fertilizers, your fish should provide all of the fertilizer that your water plants should need.

The word "pest" is too large for me to give recommendations.... but there are many none chemical ways of controlling pests in a garden...

E.g. You have a Japanese beetle problem eating your zucchini or egg plant leaves? Use Japanese Beetle traps.
You have aphids? Buy a 1000 lady bugs and release them.

What is the problem specifically?

Those beetle traps just attract more of them to your garden or property .We get a lady bug invasion 2 times a year .The good ones and the black stinky ones .If you are out mowing and sweat they land on you and bite you .

I have never had luck with them staying after release. I have tried everything from releasing at night to spraying then with soda ( soda glues wings closed for several days) Just waste of money
