Welcome, almost-neighbor (LA, just across from you)!! There are several GPF members who live close to you, around the DFW area.

There's nothing I can possibly add to the above advice, except to learn all you can and happy ponding! :)

Wow, lots of information to take in, GOOD INFO !! Thanks to everyone! And it just so happens that my teenager is in Agriculture this year in school, and mentioned starting a compost - I LOVE how this is working out!! we poked around with a net a bit yesterday, seems to be mostly leaves. I will remove as much of that as i can this eve- careful to watch for frogs/fish - I have a spare laundry basket and will get some netting at lunch, and a pump. Why wait for Saturday? Thanks you guys !!

btw pond is 6' wide x 8' long and appears to be 2' deep. has a waterfall at one end with loose 'stones' and pipe. Previous owner is unavailable, so I will have to google how all that works.

Somehow I got the impression there was a filter in the little pond, I think I got this from reference to the waterfall. You can get lots of help on building a filter in the DIY forum. Building filters is fun.

Your pond is almost 700 gallons. That's a really nice-sized goldfish pond.

Oh, the fun has just begun! Learning how everything works is loads of fun. And, when you are wondering how to put things together, just take pics of what you have, and post them. You'll be surprised at how many will chime in that they have something very similar, and show you pics how they did theirs! When I built my first pond 2 years ago, I had not studied closely enough how all the fittings would work. My friend sat down and wrote out his "list" of items we needed to buy, and when we got back, although it seemed to take him FOREVER to get it all put together, I was sure glad he was there to help. Once I saw how it all fit together, I feel very confident to repair, replace, change, etc. all of it. It's super easy. So, post pics, ask for pics for ideas, and you will learn as you go! Have fun, that's the best advise anyone will give you. Don't sweat the small stuff! Sometimes it looks BIG, but in the big picture, it's not. Keep it simple, someone else says that, and it's true. Your pond sounds like a great size, too.
