Lillies and gravel question

I had my pond put in last july and we put in established lillies and they were great all summer. I trimmed them back in the fall and they started to grow this year, but the fish dug them up and ate the small growth. I wound up throwing them out because they were completely bare and got new, established ones. The pond store added some gravel to the base of the plants and cattails that I got. My question is will the new lillies grow through the gravel or would the gravel halt any new growth? Thanks!

Depends on the depth of the gravel. Less than one inch should be fine... more like 2 to 4 inches would inhibit growth.

Plastic mesh fencing over top of pot can help.
