I am totally new at this, I started June 6, 2011. I just bought this property in January 2011 and wanted my own koi pond. I am builting it by hand and my son helps some, not much money and it is still a work in progress. I have seen some great ponds / gardens on this site which inspired me to do mine. Just had to share

Welcome to the forum. Plese post in the intro thread and give us all the details about your pond, size, depth, how long you have been doing this etc.

Lots of room to expand that is good!

welcome dlester and when you built a pond you built a pond .So far it looks good .You may want to raise you sides on the bottom so you don't get run off. Some spots you have high enough others seem low and your water looks great .How deep is your pond you say 1 to 3 feet I guess ,but is the 3 feet in your main bigger pond .I hope you don't have any predators being exposed like that .

Nice pond and gosh you have enough room there to build a lake. Will be fun watching you finish it :regular_waving_emot

Thanks for the replys, I did take into consideration about runoff, I have it rasied enough and a few drain spots around the pond. I have rocks holding down the liner in spots, we have been getting alot of wind...my plan is to build a wood frame around the larger pond for looks...I do not want all rocks around the sides.

The large square part of the pond is 1 to 3', the oval one is only 1', I made it for rocks and plants only and maybe a statue later.

I did start to dig it by hand, by the time I got the outline dug, I said the heck with that..I called in a backhole baby...it took him one hour to dig it out and $60.00...not bad!

We have wild animals, I have two dogs that take of that......so far???

Thanks again..Dave

well I can say so far it does look really great ,I of all people know about budget .That was a good price for the dig actually a great price. What kind of fish are you getting and do you have a way to keep water from freezing solid this winter .How is your pond taking the heat .I guess you will be adding plants around the pond also .Well at least there should be some great sales on plants right now with the heat we have been gettin .We finally got a really good rain storm today .

So far we have four goldfish and four Koi to start with, I don't want to move to fast. I think around here we have a frost line about 6 to 8 inches, shouldn't freeze solid. I will be getting a heater for the top this winter..ya never know when you will have a bad one..I am hoping with the size (main body)14' by 22' and depth of 1 to 3' it should not be much of a worry...I am still learning about all of this..time will tell...

I know I live near the NC border and in the 7 years I have been down here this past winter was the worst and my pond froze and it starts at 2 feet and goes down to over 3 1/2 feet deep . I can add more water and make it over 4 feet ,but I had a fish jump out so I.m keeping it down .I bought a 750 watt heater for 30 dollars from pet mountain and it has a thermastat and it can float or not float .I'm not taking any chances this winter

I have pond heater as a backup to my air pump for really cold days in the winter. Last year I used for about a two weeks time, b/c my air pump was struggling to keep a hole in the ice. Can't remember the size but I think it is around a 1500.
