An above ground pond COULD potentially freeze solid. And again - those preforms are probably the number one reason many people give up on ponding. They are so persnickety. If anything, get yourself a big stock tank to get started.

Above ground is not a great choice in colder climates, some would disagree.

@MrTony1920 I will admit that I didn’t go through and read all of the answers, but I might suggest that you start doing some good, solid research BEFORE you decide to dig a hole. It sounds like you are pond-clueless, so start at the beginning, and start with the basics. Decide what kind of pond you want to have, then learn as much as you can on a small scale. As your knowledge base increases, then start learning other aspects of ponding and fish keeping (or critter keeping, or whatever you decide you want for your pond.). Decide what kind of fish you want — do research, etc. Learn about the nitrogen cycle. Learn about your local climate. Learn about turtles (which kind) and crawfish….what kind of environment do they require.

At the risk of sounding rude, my philosophy is that of Maria in “The Sound Of Music:” “Start at the very beginning….a very good place to start! When you read, you begin with ABC. When you sing, you begin with do-re-mi……”

I live in warmer MD, my deck pond, around 18 inches deep, freezes solid. It is fishless, some winters does not freeze others a solid block of ice.
