So, the first bunch of Parrots Feather I bought from a local fish/pond store ended up being returned this morning and I was given a new clump because the roots were sparse on the last bunch and they melted away to no roots at all. Could have been chlorine in the water and no fish? So today I bought drops to remove the chlorine from my water and I brought home 6 rosey red minnows along with drops to prevent them from suffering from “new tank shock” and food for them.
I bought food to burry in the pot of My yellow floating heart on Saturday and it has sprung 5 new leaves. The water lettuce bought at the same time as the YFH looks pathetic, though you can see there is growth in the center- I hope it makes it. Another water lettuce and another long piece of parrots feather that I purchased from “The Pond Lady” down the road is thriving since adding them on Saturday.

When I had some brand new parrots feather I stuck one end in some kitty litter, seemed to help it get going. Now and I yank out a lot when it tries to take over the entire pond.

Thank you all for the previous help but now I have another question… We ended up having to get a new barrel pond because the other one was using up to two gallons of water a day due to the plastic liner being old and it having cracked which caused leaking into the barrel causing rotted wood at the bottom. We ended up getting this one. Floating heart, water lettuce and rosey reds all doing great (see pic).
Question is with this crazy Pennsylvania heat and humidity I’m getting green “stuff” on the sides and bottom. Algae? But very possibly tree pollen. What can I safely use to combat this? What you see covering the sides of the sunken pot is what’s on the sides of the barrel.
I have Tetra AlgaeControl but don’t want to kill the plants and minnows. Is there anything natural to use?
Thank you in advance!

I’d definitely have to add some shade over the barrel in the hottest part of the afternoon. Water at 9am was 70°. Not sure which, minnows or guppies would be better suited for warmer temps. Afraid goldfish would get too big for this barrel.
A few guppies. They are tropicals and can handle the warmer temps. Goldfish need cooler water.
