I'm new to the forum and looking to build my first pond. My question is about putting the pond next to an existing wall and the pressure it will exert on that wall.
I've attached a photo that shows where I'd like the pond to go. What we have is a fairly large hole that the previous owner dug and then never got round to putting a pond in. It's about 4m length and 3m at its widest. It slopes down to a depth of 1m at the far corner where the two walls join. The wall under the decking is actually the back wall of a shed that is built under the decking and accessible from a lower garden layer. The bottom half of that shed wall is two breeze blocks thick and the top half is one block thick.
I gather the main options are basically a pre-formed pond (e.g. fibreglass or HDPE) or a liner, so I'm just trying to work out pros and cons of both given the space and the wall. If I go with a liner, I'm guessing I'd need to build an extra retaining wall in front of the shed wall so that the water pressure isn't pushing on the shed wall? If that's right, I'd be grateful for any advice on best materials and approach to doing that. Alternatively, if I go with something like the pre-formed Blagdon Damselfly 1250, I know I'd need to backfill it, so presumably there is still pressure pushing out from the sides - would that still be a problem as ultimately the pressure would push against the backfilled soil/sand, which would in turn push against the shed wall. So would I still need a retaining wall even for a preformed pond?
