Hi all. I have begun mortaring the stone along the inside of my natural pool. The pond is an odd shape - 6’ W x 10’ L and 4’ D at the deepest point. Two benches run along the long sides. The regeneration zone is on the far side (shallow area, orange bucket) and in the most foreground, there is another enclave for more plumbing
and another airlift pump.

My question is: Do I trim and seam the excess liner in the red circles, or should I flatten it as best I can and mortar over it? The green stick figure is where the stone has been started.

Thank you in advance

PONDS HAVE A WAY OF EVOLVING, weather it be from plant growth, winter changes from freeze thaw, or people walking on the edges of the pond pushing them down or compaction could have been better before tons of rock and boulders were placed on the liner. For these reasons we usualy suggest tucking exces liner so if anything does shift you have the extra liner ready to go.

one other mention for food for thought is your stacked stone wall if your not placing concrete to lock the rocks together, using waterfall foam is the next best thing it's more expensive buttttt its much quicker and easier. not it is not as strong as mortar by any means but it does lock by squeezing the rocks thus giving the wall 10 times the regitity of a dry stacked wall. one last tip i\f you try this is don't go crazy worrying about too much foam and it blowing out between the seams. , let it dry then use a multi tool with just a scraper blade or a saw blade thats destroyed and simply trim back the DRY FOAM
