That depends on the condition of your pond. If the fish are not feeding, then there is little or no waste. Are there leaves or other debries getting into it?
Personally, I have enough water loss that I rarely do much except top off my ponds. When I dump my bio filter, it evacuates about 50 gallons and I do that weekly in the summer and once a month in the winter.

Thank you to all for your replies.

Also, if there is a mild spell should we feed the fish or once we stop should that be it until next spring?

Watch your water temperature, even if it mild, the temperature may not climb enough to "wake" them up for eating. There is probably enough natural food in the pond, algae/bugs, that they will be fine without you giving them food, if they start eating a little.

My water temp is now 50% F but the goldfish are still begging for food. Is now the time to shut them off from food? RDK

yep. their digestive bacteria are asleep and can't help with food processing, and their bodies have shut down to the point where they are not using much energy to maintain. picture a heart that shifts from 60 beats a minute to 8 beats. not much need for nutrient energy, and they can get what they need from alga. consider them sleepwalkers.

I feel like such a bad fish mommy not feeding my finned little piggies. Unfortunately, the water temp is 48* and I am holding strong. We still have water lettuce and water hyacynth in the pond so they can eat the roots along with the algae...but they still beg and follow me around the pond looking for food. It has been 3 days so far. :(
