Year 7 of ponding….. other than the first year of loosing all my fish, by my own ignorance….. six years of 8 huge koi…. Zero water testing…. Good bio filtration and plants and more plants…. Little work in the spring, little work in the fall to keep the plants in check. The cool thing about this pond is when I lost all my fish I went to Pet Smart and brought 2 “Test Fish “….. one is kinda plain, black and white….. but is huge, I know it weighs way over 10 pounds, the other not as big but orange and black, one of the prettiest fish I have.
Like I always say less is better…. 8 koi in 3000 gallons, filtration, as many plants as you can stand equals almost zero maintenance

Beautiful pond. Do they have babies and you get rid of them to keep your same #?

I do not have the willpower to just have 8. So I mostly have goldfish so I can have more of them.

Agreed with @Laaf I don't have the will power for only 7 maybe some day I will. Thankfully I do have more than 4000 gallons. if I could have grabbed all 5 siblings of a fish I just got I might have given it a shot though. The dealer didn't want to let it go after they took a good look at it. When this little girl doubles in size she will reap a nice shinny penny.

They spawn every year, my first year I had hundreds of babies, that was the reason I lost all my fish that first winter. I guess they have figured out that eggs taste good, no fry since the first year. But if I did happen to get some I would definitely put a predator in the pond…… not going through that again
