Do the scales look like pinecones? If so, the fish is probably suffering from dropsy (a body-systems-wide shut down). Are there things you can do? Probably, but these fish are pretty sick. In my opinion, humane euthanasia is the best solution.

They can live for several days like this, eating and swimming normally. But their kidneys are shutting down and there is little that can be done to save them. It is very rare that one survives, even with intensive veterinary care.

I do not trust when they say it is or is not contagious and seeing as the fish is only going to get worse it is time to put the fish into a plastic bag and place it in the freezer it's body temp will drop slowing down the fish like it is going for a nap in the winter but never awakes, i believe clove oil is also another way .

Not worth risking the other fish imo

I don't believe it is contagious. I have had well over 100 goldfish in my pond for years now and have had exactly ONE pineconed fish.

To me, clove oil is a more humane way to euthanize a fish. But who really knows what they go through with any method. I allow them to live as long as they are acting normally. When they stop eating and show signs of distress, then I feel it's time to let them go.

I suppose that if the kidney failure is caused by a disease, then that disease could be contagious. But it might also have other causes that wouldn't have a contagious component.

understood but not being a vet and there is no way to know it is just not worth the risk imo
