to be toally safe, nets must be elevated above the water... if theyre not. a heron can still spear the fish. it may not be able to get it out and eat it. but it will leave it in the pond to probably die a slow death from the puncture wound or laceration(s).

I have mine 2-4 feet above the pond, varies at different areas of the pond. The areas the heron has consistently fished from, the netting is 3 feet over the pond, drapes down to the ground far enough from the water it can't reach a fish.

Got my new net from Memphis net yesterday... It was a real bugger untangling it, but it's on now and it looks great! Large openings so no critters or birds get stuck. It's really nice - I'm glad I got it. No more heron worries either. :claphands:

I stretched mine out pinned to the ground to get it laid out for the pond, made it a lot easier, then carefully folded it so I knew how to put it over the water.

Gee, I hate that we have to resort to "covering" our ponds, but we do what is necessary to protect our fish! Had our 1st GBH sightings last week. I put a floating gator in the pond, but I can see a net in the immediate future for us, as well.

looking good, I love that net, safe for other critters.

Suggestion, take the hard plastic spray paint, spray the white pvc with brown, green black, alternating colors. Will make it almost disappear.

I would not mind the heron getting a few, but they tend to stay until the pond is empty. With as many as we have here, a net is needed. At least no holes in the liner by their big sharp beak.
