Confusion over hose and fittings sizes

Hi guys. I'm in the UK so bear that in mind when I'm talking about dimensions. This must have been asked and answered a thousand times but I can't find any advice which answers my question. I have ongoing confusion with the sizes of pump fittings, hoses and other pond features.

Why is it I am finding that pump and waterfall inlets and outlets which are a simple female BSP thread on the pump to a plain barbed outlet for the hose are 22m and 27mm when the hose it fits comes in 32mm, 25mm and 20mm?

I have had my simple plain garden pond for many years now and have always had problems matching up. I have a home made fairly large bio-filter which has always worked wonderfully well, a standard sized purchased UV light box, and a stainless waterfall unit. Finding fittings such as tank connectors or just matching hoses to seamlessly connect throughout the system is a hotchpotch of pond and plumbing bits and bobs.

Why are there so many differing sized connectors within a simple pond system? I can find a few adaptors for say 22mm to 25mm but the prices are exorbitant for such a simple part because of its scarcity. Am I missing that you can simply clamp with double wire hose clips a 25mm spiral hose to a 22mm outlet and so on? Surely it can't be as complex as I have always made it?

Theres a lot of things you guys do over there where we scratch our heads saying hmmmmm and why would you do that. This sounds like one of them. But here anyways we call what your looking for as a reducer.

Sorry love but no one here but us yanks. We did have one brit hanging here but havent seen him since the fall.
The lower end pumps and such here hace similar issues. But once you get into the pros or real honest pumps the fitting become more of a standard and universal.

Thanks GBBudd, that makes it very clear. Of course the resources we have in our respective countries will vary greatly, that's the nature of the Atlantic divide after all. And it will mean that the advice you guys can offer based on your own much bigger installations will not really be suitable to my smaller needs. I really appreciate the straight talking heads up. Hope your pond continues to thrive. 👍
