What I would do after the filter and before the waterfall I would put in a 3-way valve to divert the water into the pond at night.

What I would do after the filter and before the waterfall I would put in a 3-way valve to divert the water into the pond at night.

That is a good idea, therefore won't need two pumps.

its not moving water so much as the oxygen, and food it carries that keeps the bacteria going....an air pump and a couple airstones in the filter would greatly increase the life expectancy of the bacterial colony. should the flow be slowed or cut off.... on a side note my neighbors love the relaxing soungs of the falls.
