12 comets from roughly 4'' to roughly 10'' but most around 7'' . feed them twice a day and they consume most if not all food in a minute or two . have never figured out a good way to know if i am over feeding or under feeding . yes , i tried a ''search'' but didn't find it helpful . by the way , we have had a LOT of ''junk'' from trees in the air for probably a month and pond went from clear to real cloudy , looked awful . while deciding what chemical to buy to resolve issue i remembered my '' quilt batting '' and put a layer of it in our savio filter . in about two days pond is again crystal clear . . . . .peace

I, too, feed my goldfish 2-3 times a day. I've read several posts on here by people who say there's really no need to feed as the fish will happily forage on insects, plant material, etc., but I'm trying to fatten them up. My two shubunkins are the largest and probably now about 5-6 inches in length. That's up from the 3-4 inches when I bought them at the end of last summer. I'm sure others will chime in.

Test your water parameters. If your water is testing with good numbers for pH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, KH….your fish are healthy and thriving, and you are not having issues with excessive algae, then you are probably fine. A lot depends on the filtration system you have, the amount of aeration, and the size of your pond. Goldfish can survive just off the algae that accumulates on the surfaces in the pond. The more you feed them, and the larger they grow, the more you will have potential issues with water quality. Stay on top of the water quality and you will be fine. I rarely feed my GF — they have plenty of natural forage in my pond.
