Hi Guys,

A general question about fish population control.....

In the pond i have at the moment i have about 100 3" fish amd 3 12" fish. The smaller ones came from the original 3 larger ones.

I'm now looking to build a new, bigger pond, stocked with koi and goldies. However, i don't want a population explosion like i had last time.

Can anyone recommend a natural way to keep the popualtion down? I predator fish maybe that won't attack the koi or goldies?

cheers,

Andy.

The koi will eat the eggs as fast as they are laid so the population is self regulating. There are always a few that excape long enough to be entered into the herd.

I had the problem with a couple of goldfish that I had in my pond with the koi. I just took the male goldfish out and let him go in an outdoor fountain in some kind of housing community. (it was roughly 10K gallons and had a dirt bottom so he'll have plenty to eat)

So if you have a bunch of females, maybe remove the male? Or if you have a bunch of males, remove the female.

Yeah I thought of that and I specifically picked one of those ponds that are really close to the houses and a road. Took me a while to find one. I have been to that housing community before and its very active, there are always kids playing, people jogging, bike riding, and coming and going in their cars. The only advantage we have over herons is that they are very skittish, so its my hope that they simply won't want any part of that high traffic area. I think its the only thing that keeps them away from my pond at my home too.
