I became interested in the gin rin koi lately and am wondering if anyone has any knowledge about this type of koi. I have one in my pond from last years spawn but have no adults with the scale pattern. We have purchased several but are not sure if the scale pattern will stay true. Anybody have any info on these guys?

Such as what type of information? GinRin stay gin rin all their life, but as they get larger and the scales grow it gets less pronounced. It is caused from prismatic reflections in the scales, they are tiny stiations in the scales themselves that refract the light and that's what give the sparkling effect. Any color koi can be found as a GinRin but not all colors have been worked with so that's why some colorations are fairly easy to find and others are hard. The only coloration I have seen that does not show distinct GinRin is sumi or black, I thinks its due to the fact that the black doesn't allow the light to refract from the scales more than them not having the scales that would reflect the light in other colors.

That is what I was trying to find out. I wasn't sure if the scale pattern would stay the same. I have not seen any adult ginrin koi. I got a mix of colors and patterns so guess will see what happens. Thanks-

One reason you haven't seen many adult GinRin is they are fairly new to being available to hobbyist. They have been available to Show keepers for several years but as more and more started breeding more are now becoming available to pet keepers. They do lose some luster and sparkle as they get larger but still keep enough even when adults that you can tell they are quite different and have more sparkle than regular colored koi.

These are some of the new guys. We lost 3 of my large breeding stock and I sold several others to get my fish load down so we are trying something new. Most of my buyers are looking for something new.

I like that white shiny black peppered one! Well all are very pretty but I was just attracted to that one for some reason.

Well we have had several spawns this year with the gin rins. I tried to move some eggs out after spawning but wit no luck. However, we now have 8 1 1/2" fry swimming with the herd! 7 are dark metallic and one all orange. Not seeing any sign of gin rin scales yet but the dark ones look hopefull. Hoping for another spawn this weekend with the full moon and a chance to move eggs. Will have to sell off a lot of fish before winter as I am over stocked in both ponds. Have 16 babies from the other pond in a separate tank.

Thanks for the link - Didn't know anything about these fish when we found a couple in our pond. One was pale purple color and has since faded to a yellow-grey. We now have 22 gin rins of all different patterns and colors and the new babies. It looks like the fry could have the gin rin trait as well.
