I'm in vegas were even in coldest winter it rarely goes under 39 at night.

I've done plenty of casino hopping in December at 2am and its 58 degrees outside...

That's far more the norm than hitting 30s

As you can see even dec jan and March the day time average is around 61 and night time average is around 42

Meaning at night the pond might kool down to 50 (as water kools slowly)

Also since the warm water remains on too above 39 degrees...

The deicer I have in mind will shut off at 70 degrees.

"In theory"

With average day time temps of 60 in the coldest months and an extra oomph from a 70 degree heater...

In nevada it just might be possible.

I would never attempt this in my home state of virginia where it surely gets 20 and below degrees.

But cut me a little slack here..

60 degree average day time temp from Dec through Feb is not a "cold" place

Deicers are just that- not heaters! In order to heat your pond its going to have to be a thermostatic controlled heater. If the weather does get cold, its going to be the same as running your toaster 24-7! Thats why I put my 1500w heaters in my pond but never plug them in unless I get 4" of ice. $20 a day!

$20 a day!!!!! Yikes. I'm poor!!!!!

Thank you.

I'm still heavily researching.

I really want a paroon shark. That's the end goal.

So while I can put the guppies ect. In a 55 gallon I'm ordering next month.

The paroon shark will get 2-3 feet and have to be in the pond.

So this heat equation will have to be solved.

So this heat equation will have to be solved.

Then I will repeat my original suggestion - some type of structure over the pond that you can keep the ambient air temperature controlled would be the most reliable solution. It could be like a small green house that you could even sit inside of during the cooler days and enjoy your pond in relative warmth. Just enclosing it will help keep the temps (air and water) up.

I checked with a friend who has a koi pond in Las Vegas. She said that her pond usually stays in the 50’s during the colder weather. It gets cold enough that she stops feeding during that time. There are days in the 20’s. She also mentioned that she has a son who keeps a heated pool in Vegas (no idea what size), and that he averages about $300/month extra in electric. Water temperature and air temperature are not the same thing. The air temperature affects the water temperature, but they are not equals.

@Killemall I just Googled the temperature range for guppies and mollies for you. They do best at temps between 72 - 78 degrees. The paroon shark has a minimum tolerance of around 75 degrees. I promise you that your pond’s water temperature is going to go lower than what any of these fish can tolerate.

You know, you can do whatever you want to with your pond and your fish. We may not agree with your choices, but they are your choices. It seems to me that this discussion is going nowhere. You have asked for advice. We have given our advice. Personally, I am removing myself from this topic thread. Buh bye!

Mmathis. 50s in colder weather is actually not bad. I'm sure I'll find a way to get the temp around my desired 70 degrees with the help here.

Thank you for the info.

@callingcolleen1 keeps her guppies outside in Canada. She uses a heater and has the small pond covered. Search this forum. She has a thread and some videos. Good luck.

After a week of reading I'm starting to slightly understand this cold weather stuff. Never had to think about this with my Hawaii pond builds.

So I'm in vegas which is apparently zone 9b..

From what I've been reading all across the internet zone 9b can safely have just about any fish I want all year (within reason ofcourse)

Most things I'm reading are saying zone 9b dosent need any winter precautions.

I dont really trust the internet so I researched a ton of pond heaters and their reviews..

For zone 9b and 1000 gallons it states that 250 watts from a KnH submersible will keep my pond around 55 degrees.

I guess we will see as I ordered it and will install in the next few weeks.

I'll also be ordering a 55 gallon vepotek cylinder tank to keep the guppies nice and warm in house.

Thanks for help. Feel lucky to be 9b for sure!!!!!!
