Las Vegas 1000 gallon pond and heater???

I live in city.

But I do see ocassional crows. My biggest fancy is 5-6 inches.

I'm thinking about getting one of those garden owls to help keep things away

I used an average of 9 feet wide, 13 feet long and 2 feet deep and got 1750 gallons.

Same when I use this one:

Interestingly enough when I use this one:

It gives me an answer of 784 gallons.

But when you use the formula: width x length x depth x 7.5 you get 1755 gallons.

That third one may be assuming a rocked pond - volume lost due to water displacement.

Raccoons will find you if they are in the area. They love nice easy to catch fish, can get past walls, and find ways into things we thought secure. Just be aware that it’s a possibility

So true... and they are EVERYWHERE. Even the most suburban or urban areas have way more raccoons than people realize. We watched a documentary about raccoons and how they have adapted better than most mammals to living amongst humans. They showed a few night shots from both urban and suburban areas - raccoons everywhere. And you haven't lived until you've had the experience of opening your trash can lid after dark and encountering a raccoon enjoying the fine dining opportunity in your garbage. I was startled - he was only slightly annoyed. We tried putting a cinder block on top of the can - they just push it off. We now bungee the top of the trash cans - they haven't quite figured that one out yet. But they will.

When we lived in the Chicago area our house had an attached garage. One evening we opened the inside door to see a large raccoon in the garage, hustling away. Then we noticed that the large plastic bin we kept our dog food in was making a strange noise --- opened the lid & found THREE baby raccoons inside just stuffing themselves silly! They are bold little beasties - especially when they're so habituated to humans, like they are when living in suburban storm sewers, rather than out in the woods.

Yup. We switched the dog food, fish food, and bird seed to containers with gamma lids. Those they haven't figured out yet! We keep a small container of fish food by the pond and fill it when needed. They've chewed through that, managed to unscrew the lid, bashed it on the rocks... they know all the tricks! But I figure a little fish food is worth losing if it keeps them from fishing in the pond!

I have a camera watching my pond. So far only ocassional birds luckily.


My pond is only 27 inches deep in the middle. Perhaps a 4x4 foot area is that deep. The rest is sloped.

So probally only 1000-1300 gallons.

I'll use that calculator and see what I come up with

I built it September 5th. It was in the 100-108 range if memory serves.

I only had one pump circulating water.

Fish seemed ok

Now I have 2 pumps circulating to keep water cooler and I've planted lily's to help with shading.

She will be a nice garden pond like you guys have eventually

Hell with the fish at 108 I'm not digging any hole in the ground hell I wouldnt even build with an excavator

I put 8.5 wide and 12.5 long at only 1.5 deep to make up for the sloped areas.

So looks like 1000-1250 is a pretty safe bet

I made this for my pool building friend and he came up with 1600 gallons.

I actually went inside and took measurements.

Seems like 75% is in the 19-26 inch range

But some of it during the first 6 inches is in the 11-15 inch range

This is why I put 1.5 foot deep average. And coming up with 1200 gallons on the calculator

We now bungee the top of the trash cans - they haven't quite figured that one out yet. But they will.

I use a ratchet strap, that they can not open. On my garbage can bird seed holder.

I have dogs that enjoy taking them on. Not sure it will always work, I’ve had possums make it to the porch, skunks under the porch, and suspected either a raccoon or heron got a few fish in the mini pond. Which is why I went so deep for my pond, along with winter freezes in mind.
