You don't need roots on the rhizome @Gordo33 - you can cut the tiniest piece and plant it. As long as it has a growing tip it will grow.

EDIT: Let me clarify - the rhizome IS the root. But you don't need any of the thin root growths that come out of the rhizome.
Yes technically you are corrdct. It's my understanding roots grow out of the rhizome.

I have let mine grow out of pots they make it to clean leaves out from the root mass. I also have put another pot next to one and set the root mass on top held down with a small rock it basically did the replant for me I just cut the rhizome after it took root and trimmed the rest back they both did well. Other wise I divid every other year as needed has always done well for me. Snow on Saturday so probably not this year

Mine are not in pots w/any media at all, just sitting in plant baskets w/holes in them weighted down w/a rock. I am wondering how big they are now as I haven't checked them for awhile. I'll have to do that this year as I don't want them to become giant size monsters from H*ll!

@warren Took mine awhile to start getting good blooms, a few yrs but that could be cuz I had cut them all apart when I first put them in there w/o soil. You better watch them tho if you put them in there cuz they can get dinosaur size when you are not looking!
