Hi All,

I got a net for the pond. The holes are pretty small, which is good for the green heron because his beak and neck are very small and he can poke through the larger hole nets (and he will!).

For the record, we had a maze of fishing line (6 strands), he heron looked it for a few minutes, I watched him, he then just hopped and skipped and crawled under it and ate some more fish. So he's a cheeky bugger!

Here's the thing, my pond now feels and smells like a death hole. So far an iguana has been tangled in the new net, a crab and a snake. :( All died, got stinky before I found them and my husband was not impressed at cutting rotting retiles from a net.

I guess I could get a wider weave net ...... but will it still trap all the critters I have around the pond? I think even a few wild cats go there for water. Ugh! This stupid bird is really messing up the tranquility of this pond!

I would get a motion sprinkler to scare the heron off, but the green heron is quite a small bird, if it can detect him up, it would detect the other birds that also come to play in the water.

I now have three different sections covered in lilies. The bigger fish know to stay deep and they are all doing fine. Its just any new fish and the small platy's that the bird is able to pick off.

Any creative suggestions?? If he's not afraid to weave his way through 6 strands of fishing line ...... put himself in a tight spot, he obviously has little fear.

Ok this is what I did Priscilla. I got one of those short wire fences(about 18" tall) that come in the color green or white and maybe other colors and stuck that thing all the way around my pond. That way stuff won't get stuck in the fence cuz it's metal. Don't let the net hang down loose cuz even my cats got stuck in it. Then I pounded metal posts around the pond in the corners and a couple on the sides. Got my wide weave net and attached it to the posts and let it hang down only to the top of the fence and attached it tightly to the fence w/ little "S" hooks that are easily removed so you can lift up the net step over the little fence and do maintenance in the pond. The heron came by after I did all this, walked around and checked it all out, cocked his head in dismay and left. Have not seen him since. Here I'll show you what I did: https://www.gardenpondforum.com/threads/heron-netting-101.13205/page-2

Thank goodness I never had to deal with a Green Heron, Blue herons were bad enough and I got rid of the bad blue heron by blocking the landing path. Sounds like the green heron is smaller and a crafty little bugger. Good luck getting rid if him!

Darn , I use a wide weave like jw, nothing has gotten stuck in it, the herons have quit coming. They still fly over every day morning and night, but keep going. One flew low over the pond and even did a pause and look down, but kept going. Heron free for 1.5 years now.
