Good afternoon, I need suggestions for my 125 gallon small koi pond. It has a waterfall as well. I would like to place plants or a tree in a container around my Koi Pond to add shade for the Koi. Which plants or trees could I use that would not be toxic to the fish? Thank you for any support

Welcome to our forum!

125 gallons is way to small for koi, they will out grow it real fast. Get some fan tails, shubunkins instead.

Don't worry I fell for that fish are fish and they will only grow to the size of the pond .I am now at over a 5000 gallon pond .We do not want to seem like we are putting you down ,it is just that we know from experience

Why should it! It was exactly what I wanted it was a wedding gift from my husband and he has had a Koi Pond before. I do not want a big pond since our backyard view is a Lake 3 miles long.

No it is not my husband had one before we met for years it depends on how many you can have 3-4 which is perfect but the amount of Koi I have has nothing to do with suggestions of plants...

Sweetheart, you can use just about anything you want. If you are concerned about toxicity, might I suggest that you do a Google search, as the Google database is quite expansive.

You are correct the amount of koi you should keep has nothing to do with your plant question, but the advice you received is to prevent you from having issues down the road with your 125 gallon pond. Keeping a fish that can attain lengths of 3’ in a small pond isn’t good for the fish and will just lead to frustration for you down the road. No one is criticizing just giving you friendly advice, all the members here want you to be successful with your setup.

Welcome @Cindi ! You'll find lots of experienced and helpful people here on the GPF.

The main issue with your question is you asked which PLANTS would be toxic to your fish, but your POND will be toxic to your fish, so it won't even matter. You said "small koi pond" - your pond is indeed small, but there is no such thing as a "small koi". That's simply a fact.

As for plants - you'd be hard pressed to find many that ARE toxic to fish. If you google the question, you'll get a long list of plants that are purported to be toxic to fish but most of them are plants that are commonly used around ponds with no issue.

Thank you very much for your concern♥️ I really want to ensure my Koi stay healthy ... they are a treasure to me. I spend most of my time in my Zen Garden as well as my art and gardening. I enjoy this group♥️
