I like your idea of forming a "pot" out of stones and gravel. It's more natural and gives the plant room to spread its roots.

Eventually they take over the whole thing. I've pulled up plants to divide and found the rocks that held them in place when they were just tiny little things completely overtaken by the root ball.

Here's another (unsolicited) tip - go to your regular nursery. If you ask if they have pond plants, they may say no but I guarantee you they will have marginals you can use. Cardinal flower, joe-pye weed, creeping jenny, rushes, sedges, irises, papyruses, taros - they'll have lots of things that will work!
