Pond water level dropping

Hi All,

I recently dug a garden pond and put an underlay and pond liner down.

The pond itself is in a fairly sunny area, I would say it gets partial sun in the morning and full sun in the afternoon.

The water level seems to drop regularly, I checked it yesterday and considering we had heavy rain the day before last the level had dropped about 5mm.

Over the course of a week I would say it had dropped about 2 inches on the hotter weeks.

I am hoping it is down to evaporation rather than anything else, the pond is rather exposed right now and I haven't yet put any plants etc. in it.

If there were a rip or tear in the liner, would the leak be more significant?

Thanks for your help.

Do you have a waterfall? You could be losing water from the splashing of a waterfall.

I have no waterfall or hoses, it is just water in a hole basically!

Unlikely, to be a leak, unless the liner was punctured during the install. You would know it, a epdm liner doesnt puncture easily, if it is an epdm liner. On a hot day I could see losing a 1/4 inch of water roughly. Most likely just evap.

Thanks. It was a fairy heavy duty liner with a underlay put down as well. Was done very softly.

Any chance of some pics of your pond, pics can help tremendously in determining if there's a problem which may not be evident from the info you've given so far.

When we are hot I easily lose a inch plus a day. I have a lot of plants that suck the water out and evaporation.
I add 30 minutes of water every day, auto timer on a hose. We are on a well, so no chlorine issues.

When we were 90 plus I had to add extra water.

I will get some pictures up, thank you for the replies.

I have noticed that underneath the liner there seems to be a fair amount of condensation / dampness, is this a normal occurrence?
