This morning I dug out my little run-off bog, lined it, poked a few little holes so it doesn't stay constantly filled with water, and now I'm going to fill it with sand and plant things in it. I need about 8 cubic feet of sand, but I'm wondering what kind to buy. Do I need to have play sand that's been rinsed etc. or can I just purchase the sand that's used for pavers or concrete? The water that goes into the bog comes from the pond when it rains, but it will never travel back into the pond as it's considerably lower.

Also, have you ever heard of having a mosquito problem from just wet ground?

I would use pea gravel or the construction gravel (near the concrete in home depot) the sand will get clogged up pretty easy, the gravel allows stuff to flow through. If your water is not standing on the surface, mosquitoes won't breed in it.

I'm going to let Addy or one the nice ladies/gentlemen here address your bog question. I think some of them are better for answering that than myself, as for the mosquitoes, if the water stays in the yard for more than 24 hrs then the mosquitoes can leg their eggs and the wigglers hatch, two more days and they emerge into those pesky bitters. try mosquito donuts, or dunks. they are available at Lowes, home depot and most lawn and garden stores. they work great! Not expensive and if they are breeding in stagnant water in your yard that can become a serious health hazard for you, your family, your neighbors and your pets.

With it being out of the pond when you put in plants you can leave the dirt on their roots if you wish. They will love the run off and grow well. If your pond does not overflow, make sure you wet it off and on.

Thank you both for your help. It's raining here right now, and we're supposed to get some real soakers this afternoon, so I'll get to see how it behaves, water-wise. Tomorrow I'll get the gravel and then I guess it will be time to explore some neat plants!
