I would not use a aquarium heater for the fact the lowest temp setting is around 68 degrees, it would run all the time. If you insist on using one look at the Rena Smart Heaters, no glass, and I believe you can touch them when they are on without getting burned.

You can also cover your pond, I am going to build a hoop house over mine with 1-1/2" electrical pvc and cover it with 6 mil plastic.

it is true the lowest temperature on the aquarium heater from walmart was 65. I read that fancies should hibernate in cold water 55+F to spawn for the next season. Is there any particular website that you recomend to buy the Rena Smart Heater?

I don't know if anybody had tried it, but that clear roofing material they sale at home depot etc, would probably work great. If you could incorporate it over your pond, it would let the sun in, keep the snow and cold out. Be tougher than plastic.
