Culchie,
How big of a pond are you thinking? You could still do a pond and put a bridge over it or you could make a small dock to overhang the pond to provide some shade.

I went dumpster diving to get the underlay for my pond. The guy from the carpet store said it cost him $500 every time they got their huge dumpster emptied. Needless to say he was happy to have people come and remove the contains for free so they could postpone the $500 fee.
The only problem I see with using old carpet or underlay under your liner is you have to be careful and make sure there are no staples left in it, other than that I think it works better than the comercial stuff they sell for pond underlay because it offers more protection.
As for it stinking, I have dug up old carpet that had been in the soil under ponds and pools and whatnot for years, the only thing it smelled like was dirt. The bacteria living in soil and responsible for giving dirt it's unique odour also ends up living in the carpet.

Here and in a lot of states they recycle the carpet and padding and it is against the law to take it out of the dumpster .I guess more and more states are starting that kind of recycle because the companies and stores get a tax break for recycling it .
