So a couple of weeks ago, we saw a big grey feather by the lower pond and a couple of missing fish!

I decided to get this and it seems to be working! Although, I have to remember it's there of I get a good dousing. I hope this works as the next steps is really netting over the pond which I don't like, as I think it detracts from the pond.

I would love to use one, but I have too many moving in the wind plants that set it off all the time.
Glad it is working for you

If you put fishing line about 10" off the ground they won't cross it. The line is so thin you won't notice it.
Mine did, right over, made it higher, flew, flopped over

I am thinking of adding a sun shade like you see over patio seating. Sounds kind of crazy, I know but I am planning on placing it at ground level on the back side of the pondand then extending it level out and over the back two thirds of the pond. It will then make the pond unapproachable from the back. I am thinking it won’t block our line of sight from the front. It will block sunlight so that will affect the pond plants to some degree, but will also reduce algae blooms and moderate sunlight during the summe. Please tell me your thoughts.

I did as your thinking with your sun shade but i did it with a 2" square golf net from 30' away you can barely see it against the woods in back. idid install a pole in one corner and ran the other support to the top of the garage.
i then ran cables / " could have used fishing line over head basically 12 ' over head . so now the heron can't walk in from the back nor can they fly in from over head. with my tall hedge on one side the garage on the other only the patio is open. so far so good.
i have seen the beaky buggers standing outside the net trying to figure out how to get in.

Here is a picture of the pond. The hand drawn sun shade is not in perspective as the back edge would be sitting just above the ground and the front right corner would be about four feet above the ground.

Would you post a couple pictures? I think that is what I am going for. My preferred shape will be a long triangle

I intend to make a simple fence around the edge of pond which I can easily move.

The idea is to find some nice stones that matches my pond surrounds and make a fence a bit like the barrier you get in airports to guide people. So with the stones do a bit a whittling on them so they have a flat side to stand on, they need to be quite heavy. Then drill a vertical hole in them a stand a 24" long dowel or 1/2" pipe in them. Once I have a number made, drill four holes in each and thread a find string between them. So i have a simple portable fence I can put around the edge of the pond when we are not there.

Why not do scutcheons secured to the cap with poles or wood posts and cables, or rope when not in use just roll the whole thing up.
