We've been on a weather roller coaster since March. I think El Nino is fading, which means the warm winter we had in Chicago gave way to the usual up-and-down weather we have during the spring. A few weeks ago we hit 85 degrees one day, and by the next day it was back in the 40s with ice-cold rain and that dampness that just goes right through your body. The daffodils seemed to come up a little earlier than usual, as did a few of the other perennials...but the tulips grew on schedule, as did most of the other plants, including the shrubs I call the Mother's Day shrubs as they are usually in full purple-y bloom on this weekend.

Spring is baaaack, temps 20f below norm, dull and showery, does not seem to have bothered the water hyacinth.

The 10 new offsets started a month ago on a 4' pond are now 104 plants and need to be thinned out...

With temps all set to bounce back from unusually cool, lets get some of the tropical waterlily tubers started, ahah!

This single tuber with a single sprout should be ideal to start a flowering position for Antares night bloom tropical waterlily

When I put in our pond, about a month ago, I thought spring was here, then a very cold night rolled in and left freezing water from the waterfall on my Japanese ferns which killed the fronds back and damaged the leaves of my Hacheura. So, its been a hit and miss spring, for sure. Lol. (Luckily the ferns are recovering)

With drought being an increasing feature of the Summer months on the clay ponds, these resilient LA iris are a perk no matter how brutal the climate extremities swing
