Do any of your fish ever disappear and reappear?

Sorry for everyone's losses. I have a rock fountain with waterfall on my back deck that is the home to my koi. We had our roof replaced in October; they did not like the disruption of the roofers and disappeared into the hidey-hole and to this day have not reappeared. With warmer weather on the way, I hope to see them emerge again. I have not seen any bodies to indicate they died. I have had koi for many years, grown them from 2" to 1' 6" and never experienced this extreme disappearance. The latest were Japanese Koi, Sparkle (white) and Patches (multi-colored). Koi bring me a lot of joy! Little Rock, AR

@Condo Queen
Maybe they are just chilly and not ready to come up and be active till it warms up? My goldfish when the weather is cold stay way down deep. Sun comes out and it warms a bit and up they come.

I love when these old threads pop back up. It's fun to see old familiar names show up.

We had one fish that used to disappear for weeks at a time. Everytime we thought she was gone for good, she'd pop back up again. She was a chubby little thing, but we think she would find her way behind the rocks in the pond and then take her time finding her way back out again. She never seemed any worse for the wear.

You are becoming one of those old familiar names we do not see you so often any more, Life is cruel it's always moving on , each day changes just a little regardless of weather we want it too or not,. Hope all is well with you

Mine disappear all the time. In fact I had two that disappeared, only to show up in the upper pond. Still have no clue how they did that. Unless they are part Salmon.

It is scary how these AI bots are learning. That message from Wednesday looks fairly real. But a real person does not join and immediately post to a random thread 15 years ago. Fascinating to see AI in action but scary also.

Then there are other times when you wish the person you see show up again is only a AI , and then you realize they are the real deal and you take a deep deep sigh realizing they are back ...............:sneaky:

I don't know - we've see that here lots of times. People come on the forum searching for a specific topic and find a thread that fits the subject and post without realizing the thread is many years old. So I do think it's possible that a real person would do that. I've often searched for a particular issue on the Internet and found myself right back here on the GPF, reading something that was posted years ago.

But let's say it is an AI bot - what's the purpose? Who runs these things and why would THEY have interest in appearing to be a human posting on a pond forum, of all places? I guess I could see if I ran a pond forum and was trying to generate interest, I might get me some bots to start posting random content. But other than that WHY would there be bots posting here? That's always been my curiosity... WHY? What's the end game. I'm guessing somewhere there's money involved, as there always seems to be, but in this case I can't put the pieces together. It's not like they're scamming anyone... or are they and I'm just missing it?

@Condo Queen - are you for real or just another bot?

Its about training the AI language models. They are not doing this for pond knowledge. It is to train these AI models how humans converse and how AI can be more human. So online forums are a great way for the models to learn, because there are discussions back and forth. Reddit is a big source for learning. This is an open forum that is free so it is perfect for these AI models. Its a big issue for online media companies like WSJ, NYT, WAPO because their content is being used without compensation.
A quote from one article:

This battle exists because of the way AI chatbots are made. The so-called large-language-model algorithms that power these bots have to be trained by taking in and processing oceans of existing language to try to mimic what humans say, and how they say it. This isn’t the kind of data we’re used to thinking about as a commodity on the internet, such as the behavioral and personal information used to target ads by companies like Facebook parent Meta Platforms.

This data is the creative output of the human users of various services, such as the hundreds of millions of posts by Reddit’s users. Only on the web can you find sufficiently sized repositories of such human-generated words. And without it, all of today’s chat-based AIs and related technologies wouldn’t work.

Wow. Interesting. I knew there was obviously work that had to happen to make AI get more and more "I", so that makes sense.

At one time you could see who was on this forum and how many were bots... I don't see that option any more.
