Thanks for all the details!

So we are looking at something like this:

- no need for underlayment or liner
- assume most concrete is still ok, will find out after emptying pond
- empty pond, place fish and plants into separate containers / temporary pool
- hire pool company to do the following:
- remove cracked mortar and coping pavers
- put new coping and pavers/concrete (green areas in drawing)
- ensure water proofing of wall near coping
- while we are at it, raise coping and install an overflow drain

I am assuming light brown area is clay which is typical soil in the area.

What did I miss?

Your showing a lot more of the deck being reworked then you will probably need to.

Wheres the bog. Or what is your design for a filter?
I myself would probably leave a copping off toward the lowest point of the landscaping in the area and make a dry river bed as the over flow.

And on the opposite site of the coin I'd do the same where the bog would run into the pool. Have the liner inset where the bottom of the coping would be and and place rocks along the edge and cut into the concrete patio. This will tie the bog and pool together making it look like one.

Your getting the idea now I believe . I don't see anyone else objecting to my ideas so I guess they are in agreement

Oh, right, here is the drawing with the bog filter included, showing the waterfall. Note that I already built the bog filter structure in brown, but it's not yet finished. Edit: the bog filter structure is presently sitting on the porch in front of the house.

For 25,000 plus gallons i'd bump up the percentage of bog to around 25% of the surface area of the pool or more.

Hmm, I contacted one pond company, their reply is basically, sorry, can't work with concrete cuz it cracks too much and we could only demo/rebuild the whole thing for you with liner. Waiting for more replies.

The patio is paving stones resting on 3/4" base rock. The old pond, I don't know, but I would wager concrete.

Former owner told us it used to be a sandbox before their kids got tired of it and they converted it into an in-ground pond.

If you had started your post with those sentences I would have said liner. Like I said I only have limited photos

Sorry, this thread is getting too long :-|

How about the final solution (TM)? Fill old pond with gravel & install above ground pond on top. Wooden frame with 4x4s or something, liner. As added bonus, less need to bend to trim the plants etc.
