Ok, so the skimmer needs to be moved all the way forward so the skimmer front is flush with the inside of the pond wall correct? I was thinking I could just notch out the dirt in front of the skimmer opening about a foot. However attaching the liner that way would be an issue. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

No the skimmer in my opinion works best when it is recessed back a foot and make it daily shallow but the shallower it's made the more often you'll have to add water to the pond. if you doing automatic water replacement than again I'd make it only 2 inches deep but since I don't know your complete design and thinking you can make it 6 inches and fill it in with rocks if you want it shallower latter.

The whole idea is to skimm the surface get anything that falls into the pond out as fast as possible before it sinks. So if your drawing water from 6 inches your not just pulling from the surface and you will need more horse power to do the same work.

But I've been known to improvise on the rules so far it's worked quite well.

Depending on your rock size you may e creating exactly what a just blabed on about as your shelf is shallow but remember to think how are you going to hide the liner. If your not then no worries.

Ok, the front skimmer door has a waterline imprinted on the skimmer. So I installed it where I thought it would be best. It will be easy to raise it up some by adding dirt or some gravel under it. It’s my understanding that the water line on the skimmer determines the water line in the pond. Once I both out some of the dirt in front of the skimmer, it will be easier to see where I want the water level. Also being that the skimmer sits back from the inner edge wall of the pond. What is the best way to attach the liner to it properly? Won’t the ledge around the pond make the liner not attach correctly? I could always Motch the dirt in front of the skimmer in a bowl shape extending about 1’ on each side of the skimmer. That might help with the liner install to the face of the skimmer. I just want to make sure there is no tension on the liner where it is attached to the skimmer. However I want to save a little excess liner near the skimmer for any adjustments down the road.

Just keep in mind the water level will be higher than the opening it depends greatly on the width of the opening and how many gph you push.

The width of the opening of the Skimmer? Or the width of the notch I cut out of the dirt in front of the skimmer door?

You. Can always close in an area with rocks etc it's a lot of work to dig deeper through the liner.
You might also want to dig pockets for water lily pots to hide in.

So dig out the shelf in front of the skimmer to add rocks around the front of it? So essentially I’ll just dig the ledge down deeper and wider to accommodate rocks to his the skimmer. Im still trying g to figure out how to attach the pond liner to the face of the skimmer box. It might make working with the liner in that area hard to get the liner attached properly to the skimmer face.

I'm just telling you my experience I'm not a pro but I have had pretty good luck thus far. And I have found the shallower the intake to the skimmer the more it pulls the floating debris in to the skimmer.
But I'm text on the internet and I listened to advise I wish I hadn't .

What I'm getting at is make the areas that may work better as shallow a little deeper and then you can adjust with rocks or even bib liners latter. It's pretty hard to go deeper when the liner and decorations are installed.

From what I have seen and done myself was once I pulled the trigger it was get it done work it out later. So my suggestion is to do the research now before it's written in stone.

Ok, it’s been awhile since I last updated this post. The pond is 90% done and is running well! I’ll try to pick up where I left off the best I can.

Water is added, the original pump a 3200 gallon was a little too small and didn’t give me the waterfall I wanted. I ended up buy a new 8000gal/hr pump. The new pump definitely gave me what I was looking for!

These are the (2) 20 gallon food grade barrels I’ll be using for my up flow filter. The first intake barrel will have filter pads, the water will then flow into the second barrel and will rise from the bottom to top. The second barrel will have 20-24 (6”) media blocks raised about 3” from the bottom on egg crate. Above the media blocks will be the black shredded plastic (Backing-Twist) then it will return to the pond.

I still have some rock work to do and all the landscaping. I have a few more large rocks to move into place, then backfill with river rock/ pea gravel. I have yards down to keep the weeds from growing until I get the landscape completed. The skimmer has a really nice/strong pull with the new pump. Hopefully the above video works for you all.
