How to hang things on trees without damage to the tree....

Yep I get his idea too and one could even use a curved piece of wood, paint it to match the tree or whatever flashy purple color you like and strap it on the tree w/ the arm thing deco'd up also and voila excellante' :D
Could you use metal also or would that do damage up against a tree for too long?

Metal could rust (or corrode) and stain the tree, whereas wood will weather and blend in better. (At least I think so.) Sorry, I can't attach pictures to make my point. :(
