Milky water

a pidgeon dived into my pond a couple of weeks ago, (i was amazed) it left a oily residue on the water and a few feathers, but no bubbles,

Birds indeed leave oily patches from their feathers, but Ive only seen foam on the water when we had very different kinds of visitors in our pond. not the ones you want: rats. Not saying thats the only or even most likely explanation, but might be worth checking if you have rats in the neighborhood. They love water.

What we were seeing on the surface turned out to be algae forming. With some perseverance netting out and putting Barley straw into the water, it is now crystal clear. The pond has full sun for the best part of the day too!
