Been a couple of months since I last posted, been busy at work and only just finding time to get back online. The pond is a few months older now and I thought I'd give a little update on it's progress.

My pond plants are doing good and providing plenty of oxygen to the water. It's teaming with larvae, snails and other wriggly things but no beetles or bugs as yet. The blanket weed arrived shortly after my last post so I've been removing it on a daily basis whilst my plants fully establish themselves.

I know I don't fish in my pond but I can't tell you how much pleasure I get from coming home work each evening to it.

Here are some new photos:

Well, another season and another update.

I spent most Autumn evenings picking leaves out of the ponds and then thanks to days of non stop rain I watched as my pond flooded and the water turned a lovely chocolate colour. Anyway, it sooned cleared and I was able to remove the last of the fallen leaves.

It's snowed here the last couple of days and as you'd expect my pond froze over. My cat wasn't too pleased as he drinks from it so I carefully smashed some of the ice to give him access.

Here are few pictures taken earlier today.

Might be better figgy if you took a hot pot of water and held the pot on the ice till it melted a hole in the ice. The slightest pounding on the ice could really send a concussion down there that could hurt the fish. Oh wait never mind I forgot you don't have any fish in there.

Looks really cool & glad to see it working out. I have wanted to add a small wildlife pond to my landscape for awhile. Just finally figured out a spot to add it back in. Just have to wait for spring to do it, can I ask what kind of plants you put in it?

Thanks.

Bear in mind I'm over in England, I have the following plants so far:

  • Bunches of Goldfish Weed (Elodea cripsa) - Main Oxygenator
  • Hairgrass (Eleocharis Acicularis) - Oxygenating
  • Four Leaved Clover (Marsilea quadrifolia) - Oxygenating
  • Starwort (Callitriche) - Oxygenating
  • Juncus effusus - Marginal
  • Water Spearmint (Preslia Cervina) - Marginal
  • Iris which was given to me by a friend - Marginal
I do plan to add some more marginals over time.

Lol don't worry, kept your location in mind. It seems from my web research so far, wildlife ponds are bigger in the UK than here in the states, I.e. no pump or filter. After the plants got established, did your amount of algae in the pond go down?

Forgot to mention that I also have a couple of Water Soldier plants in there too.

With regards to algae, did get a little blanket weed in the late summer but kept on top of it by carefully removing it each Saturday afternoon. Most of the water was covered with the Goldfish weed anyway.
