Remember that you fish could care less what the AIR temperature is - they care about the temperature where they are going, namely the water. A sudden cold snap cools the air very quickly, but the pond water cools more slowly. But they need to slowly transition from where they were to where they are going, temperature wise.

Hi. It's definitely the cold bothering your fish and my guess he will not survive the winter if he is acting this way. I got a 8-9" Koi last year just before it got cold that came from a water climate. It had a tough time and didn't make it. It can be really rough on a fish if it is not used to the cold. This year I'm buying smaller fish 5-6" Koi so they can acclimate better to the cold as younger fish so it will be easier as they get older. I'm hoping that works better. So far they seem pretty active even with cooler pond temperatures.

For a healthy fish, the maximum rapid temperature change given similar water quality parameters (KH,PH,NO3) is 5 Fahrenheit/2 Celsius difference.
Any more than that difference and the reaction will be negative - possibly fatal.

The fish did not survive, one big lesson learnt here. Don't put koi in your garden pond from warm water during winter

I'm sorry to hear that - I think it's a shame that whoever sold you this fish wasn't more clear on how to handle introducing it into your pond in the colder weather.
