We get black king snakes, last one I saw was around 5 feet long, had to whip the mower to a different direction to miss hitting it. I jumped off and escorted the snake into the bushes.

That snake would have escorted me into the house. I'm only used to the little garter snakes here and have much respect for any I ever will see in any other state where they are bigger than a foot or so

I found a garder snake living in and around our pond last year. My hubby HATES snakes. I went inside and said, hey honey, there is a cuTe little garder snake out in the pond. He immediately grabbed a hand gun and went marching out to the pond. I am laughing and teasing while following from behind explaining it is a garder, not a water moccasin LOL and that the only poisonous snakes we have around here are the great basin and mojave rattlers, neither of which like ponds much. The whole time he is marching around the pond saying "there is no way YOU can know it is a garder", he said "it could be a moccasin that hitched a ride on a produce truck from the south". LOL This whole time I am laughing.

I am glad your little friend didn't start such a ruckus. LOL

Many, many years ago my Dad was out night fishing for catfish in the boat on the river. He had a bucket of minnows for bait. Everythime he reached into the bucket to grab a new minnow to rebait his hook it seemed that the darn things were getting much harder to catch. At one point, something caught his eye so he clicked on his flashlight and shined it at the bucket and exposed seven inches of a garter snake sticking up out of the bucket with a minnow cross-ways in his mouth!

Darned snake had been ripping my Dad's bait off all night and the minnows in the bucket were getting lower and lower in number making them harder for my Dad to catch. Darned ole "Sneaky Snake"!

Definately a garter snake I used to keep them :LOL@: however not the sort of critter you want around the pond as they have a hankering for goldfish  and where there is one garter snake there are many :(

So the garter snakes will go into the water and get the little fish. Hmmmmmmmmm, I don't hardly ever see them around here but hope they don't eat my fish. They are good for the garden but not so much for the ponds.
