I was checking food and not sure but how old is your food and do you keep it in a cool dry place .Mold can form on or in the food that can kill fish .You may not even see the mold or smell it .grasping at straws here but trying to think of anything and everything .

I find it funny that the small new fish are not experiencing anything but the older, larger fish are. This almost sounds like the new fish introduced some parasites or disease into your pond. I would think that if your pond was poisoned the smaller fish would be affected by the comtaminants quicker than the larger fish. You could try adding alitte sale to the pond. You want noniodized salt at an amount of 3kg per 1000 liters for 2 to 3 weeks. Do not go higher than these amounts in your pond. If you need to treat them for parasites or bacterial infections I would reamove them and put them in a quarantine tank. This will allow you to see that the treatment is working and also help identify anything external on the fish much easier. Also, if you are having PH swing problems you can put 5-10 grams of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) per 1000 liters per day in your pond until you get the ph stable. A PH of 7.5 to 8.3 is best case. Scallop, oyster shells, aragonite, limestone and dolomite are great to help buffer PH.

Perhaps you could provide some info on how you determined and fixed the problem so we could learn something?

hi yes - it was the person who first started this thread who replied to me saying "In the end we contacted a really helpful guy from surrey who is a pond specialist and he thought it was costia given the symptoms. We also spoke to a guy closer to us who is an expert on koi and he also thought the symptoms were costia. We asked why no one had found anything on the scrapes and he said that sometimes it only occurs in patches on the fish so even though you scrape the side and gills of the fish it may be around the head or belly and its easily missed because its so small."

Given I knew there was nothing wrong with my water and that no fish has got worse, just more affected I figured it probably was a parasite rather than bacteraial so followed treatment above and it worked.
