Beautiful..are all your plants in pots? What is on the bottom of your pond? bare bottom liner?
YES .it is bare bottomed, except the gravel my fish have managed to make a mess with...my plants are in pots ($1.79 oil pans from Meijers) with peagravel and 1" - 1&1/2" river rock. my iris are bareroot in a milk crate, with 1 large stone on the bottom for weight, i cut some 1' long 1/2" stakes from polyethelene stock that are pushed into its root ball thru the openings in the milkcrate to secure them.
if your asking what i think you are, its a tetrapond biofilter that i converted to a "pull thru" mechanical filter, or large prefilter..meaning its before the pump.or as koikeepr calls it a retro bottm drain....lol

CLIFFANDJOANN....i'm going to try planting my lillies in lava rock...the highly pourous, extremely rough, texture should keep them safe. the rough texture wont be comfortable on their lips and even if they can handle that, they wont likely be able to get any suction on them to lift them out. but your idea looks like a good one as well. you can see one in your pics you posted in baeyas thread on the subject.
