We added three shubunkins to our goldfish mix last summer. All three looked very similar and within the last three weeks, one of them turned completely white. It seems healthy: has grown, eats well, and seems to take part in all of the goldfish games in the pond.

I know that their colors may change a bit, but to loose all color??!? Should I be concerned?

As long as the fish seems happy and healthy, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. His/her genes are just being expressed a little different. Might still change. Pretty fish!

I have a bunch of those white looking shubbies, you can see some faint blue spots on the sides of yours. They call them sunrise shubbies.

Some of my oldest goldfish are white. It’s not unusual at all. I also had a fair number of black ones. I think they survived as babies because they could hide really well from larger fish that would eat them. Almost all of them eventually turned orange! People don’t typically want to buy white goldfish so they get culled before they go to market. That’s why you don’t see them in stores. Some people don’t want to hear about culling but when goldfish and Koi have hundred or even thousands of eggs that turn to fry it’s an important part of breeding to keep the best ones.

It is a sunrise shubunkin. Sunrise Shubunkins have transparent scales which allows their pink gills to show through, as well as a light blue body. Most also have solid black eyes.
