splitting cattail

I have a dwarf cattail that has out grown its 8" pot already. I was thinking of dividing it up into 3 smaller ones but I don't want to kill it. For how fast it grew already something tells me I could divide it into 12 plants and it would be fine. Anyway has anyone divided their plants mid season?

Go for it, I divided one up into about 12 pieces and they all did well. I put mine in the stream area for rapid growth.
