Well if you got snakes, then the population of mice should go down, but Sissy, that one eyed owl might not get enough to eat!
We don't have black snakes here, we got rattlers, bull, and grass snakes, anyone know what kind of snake that black snake is??

Mike said they run from people and this one did try but think i scared him .Hey one eyed will never starve ,he is a tad over weight ,think it may be his cookie fetish . I just hope he does not try to attack me on the lawn mower like the last one did .That was one painful lesson and if I had seen him it would not have happened but I was looking the other way when he jumped up .Never knew snakes could jump ,live and learn

I wish I got a really good look at it as I was more interested in where did that black hose come from .Got the lid and dug the hole to lay it in and then it started to pour down rain again and threw the lid in the hole and ran so I would not get soaked and well at least he will have a drink now .I will make it pretty later .

Colleen, they are simply called "Black Snakes" around here, but the ones we have by me are the Black Rat Snakes. I have seen a Blue Racer before, but the black snakes around here to NOT move that fast. They are usually pretty large, and slow to get out of the way. They will flee from humans, give a chance, but if stepped on or grabbed by mistake, will probably snap at you! They are very docile otherwise, stay out of your way. I've most often seen them when I pulled a square bale of hay out, they hibernate in between the bales in the wintertime. Good place to hunt for mice, too. But, I'm a snake lover, so they don't bother me. I don't like water snakes, though. Strange, I know, but ground snakes don't scare me, water snakes do. I think it's because I was told all water snakes were poisonous, and most ground snakes around here are not.
That's unbelievable about your one-eyed owl, Sissy! Now, you need to quit feeding it cookies. OMG!!!  Nice of you to give it some padded material for it's nest, though.

well I punished him once because he stole a piece I had hanging on the fence to dry ,but when I saw why he wanted it .I make sure I leave a big piece or 2 for him .I used to just rip it up for the birdies .I think one eyed would be made at me if I stopped his cookies .I think some of the times he watches me leave in my truck and waits for me to come back .I try not to scare him because i know they need both eyes to be able to fly good .He has been hanging around here since he was young at that is at least 5 years .When people come to visit i always tell them to not go out near that shed or any wheres on the side yard because he seems to be afraid .If I catch hunters around here i put a sign up I shoot all hunters in the leg first and I 'm a bad shot if I kill you it's your fault .NO TRESPASSING .I got the no trespassing signs from the county and added the rest ,makes them think

Haha, you're one smart woman, Sissy, and I sure would not take a chance and sneak into your yard! BTW, my daughter has a horse that lost an eye due to a fungus, had to have surgery, saved the horse, lost sight in one eye. She runs barrels, poles, and gets ridden on the edges of cliffs. She has NO problem with just one eye. They learn to adjust. That owl is doing much better because he is handicapped than the ones that are fully sighted sounds like to me! He has found heaven on earth. A yard that is a safe haven, a woman that feeds him cookies and provides bedding material, and she keeps people from scaring him away. What more could an owl ask for?

Speaking of one eye, I used to have a one eyed goldfish many years ago, broke a piece of glass by accident and of glass shard fell in the fish tank, somehow that fish lost his eye due to that and I was so grossed out cause it left a big hole in the side of his head!! Poor thing, I always blamed myself for his lost eye, to make matter worse, I couldn't bear to look at him and took him to the creek and let him loose! I was a "bad" fish mom way back them!!!

Neat about old one eye sissy!

Well I am laid up. On thursday, got stung by a wasp, ankle all swollen and mowed the yard, by friday poison ivy breaking out. The grass clippings must have touched ivy and blown back on me. Started out as small spots now both thighs and one arm covered..............darn it. First time in 3 years I picked it up mowing. Sitting here covered with baking soda paste lol
Sure wish we could kill it, but it is everywhere here, I would need to kill off the entire edge of our yard and most likely it would just come back. Spread by seeds. Some of it is growing up trees, huge vines, other mixed in the honeysuckle 10 foot tall.

The lilies need to be groomed, don't dare get into the pond with the ivy sores on my legs. But they sure do love this cooler weather blooming large and beautiful.

oh well this too will pass. Honey has me on strict couch sitting restrictions lol

They say fall is the easiest time to get poison ivy and feel bad for you as I know what it is like to be highly allergic to it .I always use the naptha soap after I mow .Gosh you are making me itch thinking about it ,SCRATCH SCRATCH

I'm not sure it really works but my dad use to put lots of ice around the roots to shock it .Never seemed to hurt other plants but he swore by it .But I would sacrifice the vines and have it root killed it may be worth it .I had to have this property sprayed as there was a lot of it growing here and there so had no choice ,if I was going to be here overseeing the house set up and getting the basement done .It was spring also when it is growing more .

I wash every time I mow, scrubbing everything. Guess I missed this time. Even wash my clothes, cause the oil can get on them to

Black Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta). Can get to be 8' long! Beautiful shiny jet black after it sheds. Had one for quite a while, about 30 years ago. Very docile when handled regularly, but leave it alone for a couple of days, and it would bite when you picked it up. It was just under 4', so it didn't do a lot of damage, though. Farmers love 'em, they eat a LOT of rats and mice.

I use 20 mule team borax when I wash my clothes because the doctor had told me a long time ago that most detergents do not get rid of the oils from poison ivy .Not sure but been using it in every load of clothes for 30 years .I know it boosts laundry detergents cleaning power and raising 2 boys I needed it .
